“People come and go. Take me and Stell, we were together 6 years. Then boom she left. She didn’t say why, she just went away. I cried for a day. Then I figured something bigger than both of us was behind it so I said screw it, what’s over is over.”

Jack rolled his eyes and shifted his weight to the other leg. This guy sure likes to talk.

“So I took work on a cruise ship, maintenance, and hell if I didn’t fall right away for a little senorita cabin maid. We did it in a supply closet a couple of times and man, it was real good. Not much talk because of the language and all, but it hit the spot just perfect. Then things turned. Two passengers bit it on the same day, separate. One heart attack, the other just gone, probably overboard and dead they said after a four hour search. People  got fidgety, not knowing who to trust and all. And even back in the supply closet it wasn’t the same with my chiquita, she was all spooked.”

Jack adjusted a parachute strap and cleared his throat as he nervously scanned the open sky.

“Now I just teach how to jump out of planes. No women,  stay mostly to myself. Live in Sonoma near the airstrip. Easy job. The company signs them up and hires the pilots. And knock on wood I haven’t lost any yet. Now you get ready. Remember all the things I showed you.  I’ll count to three then out you go,  or I’ll push you if I have to.”

At the count of three Jack leapt out. He  screamed, but he also had an unexpected wistful feeling as he plummeted through the air.
